Alpa Laboratories (ALPA) is engaged in the manufacture of pharmaceutical formulations comprising of the five product lines of liquid injections, dry powder injections, tablets, capsules, and ointments. Purushottam R. Patel (chairman and managing director), M.S. Chawla and Pravin C. Shah incorporated a private limited company in the name of Alpa Laboratories on March 18, 1988. It was converted into a public limited company with effect from Sep. 3, 1998. Jayesh P. Patel is the chief executive officer of the company.
The company has a range of products such as ethical drugs, generic drugs, over the counter drugs (OTC) and veterinary products in various dosage forms and markets them under the trade mark ALPA, a registered trademark of its promoter group company Alpa Labs (India). The company has approvals for over 1,300 formulations but presently markets only 300 to 350 formulations.
ALPA also manufactures formulations for a number of other pharmaceutical companies like Cipla, Zydus Cadila, Lupin, Glenmark, Genom Biotech, Jenburkt etc. located in India and abroad. It is venturing into segments like probiotics, prebiotics, pre-filled syringes and lifestyle disorders. It is setting up a new plant in Madhya Pradesh at a cost of Rs 423.5 million. Post expansion, the capacity will reach 6,357,000 units a day from the present capacity of 2,532,000 units a day. The company would set up 13 generic drugs retail outlets in Bihar. The company won the tender to set up retail outlets floated by the state health society, Bihar as part of its implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
At present the company is present in some of the Latin American countries like Costa Rica and Haiti.
