Birla Cotsyn (India), incorporated on Sep. 24, 1941, is engaged in cotton ginning, pressing and oil expelling. It was converted into a public limited company with effect from May 30, 2006 and is part of the Yash Birla group. The Yash Birla group has diversified interest in industries like steel pipes, machine tools, cutting tools, iron castings, tool holders, power solution products, multipurpose engines pumps, textiles, carpets, furnishing, electrical appliances, lifestyle, infotech, publication, travel, electricity, cotton ginning, property development, and other areas. The major companies in the group include Zenith Birla (India), Birla Power Solutions, Dagger Forst Tools, Birla Precision Technologies, Birla Transasia Carpets, Birla Perucchini, Birla Lifestyle, Birla Electricals, Birla Concepts (India), and Shloka Infotech.
The company has its units located in Khamgaon, Ghatanji and Dhulia. It is presently in the process of implementing an expansion project with phase I started in January 2006 and phase II and III started together in February 2007 at a total estimated cost of Rs 2,891.9 million. In phase I, it acquired the business and assets of Khamgaon Syntex with a spindle capacity of 18,304 for the manufacture of synthetic yarn. It is in the process of setting up a 36,000 cotton spindle yarn manufacturing unit at Malkapur. In phase II, a cotton-yarn manufacturing facility was set up having a capacity of 1,728 rotors and is setting up a weaving unit of cotton grey fabric with 114 looms.
The textile project at Malkapur has been granted the mega project status by the Maharashtra government and will get fiscal benefits over the next seven years. On Dec. 09, 2006, a joint venture agreement (JVA) was entered into between the Yash Biral group, and P.B. Bhardwaj group to carry on the business of manufacturing, marketing and distribution of products in India as well as other places. As per the JVA, the promoter`s total equity share in the company would be taken up in a ratio of 50:50 between both the groups.
