Idea Cellular (IDEA) is India`s leading GSM mobile services operator. It was incorporated as Birla Communications on Mar. 14, 1995 and got its current name on May 1, 2002. Today, Idea Cellular is part of the Aditya Birla group which holds a 98.3% share in the company. Kumar Mangalam Birla is the chairman and Sanjeev Aga is the managing director of the company.
The company operates in Delhi, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Uttaranchal, Haryana, UP, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala. It currently covers over 60% of India`s total telephony potential. The company holds the license to operate telecom services in 13 of the 23 circles in the country. It is now poised to launch its services in Mumbai and Bihar.
IDEA is the first cellular company to launch music messaging with cellular jockey, background tones, group talk, a voice portal with Say IDEA and a complete suite of mobile email services. It offers customer friendly and competitive pre-paid offerings like super power, 2 Minutes outgoing free, lifelong offer and other segmented offerings like the women`s card.
The company recently received the GSM Association Award for Bill Flash, a first in India. Its GSM network is supplied by leading equipment suppliers such as Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens. IDEA entered into a three-year contract with Ericsson for its radio access, microwave transmission, and next-generation mobile softswitch network architecture. IBM India and IDEA inked a 10-year business transformation pact to integrate, innovate and transform the company`s business processes and IT infrastructure.
