Sterlite Industries (India) (STERLITEIND) is the country`s largest non-ferrous metals and mining company with interests and operations in aluminum, copper, zinc and lead. It was incorporated on Sep. 08, 1975 and came out with a public issue on Feb. 04, 1988. The company is a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources plc, a London-based FTSE 100 metals and mining group. Other group companies include Konkola Copper Mines PLC, Madras Aluminium Company, Bharat Aluminium Company, and Vedanta Aluminium.
The company`s main operating subsidiaries are Hindustan Zinc for its zinc and lead operations; Copper Mines of Tasmania for its copper operations in Australia; and Bharat Aluminum Company for its aluminum operations. It handles its copper operations in India. The mine in Australia is an underground mine with an ore resource of approximately 14.2 million metric tons copper ore. Located in the Pune and Aurangabad districts of Maharashtra, the manufacturing units have installed capacities of 268,000 MT continuous cast copper rods, 405,000 MT copper cathodes, 180,000 MT phosphoric acid, 1.3 million MT sulfuric acid, and 20,000 MT aluminum cold-rolled products.
Listed in the recently launched S&P India 10 Index, the company produces copper cathodes which find application in continuous cast copper rods, wire bars, bus bars, billets, ingots, moulds and other semis, copper-based alloys, tubes, strips and foils. Chemicals produced include sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, phospho gypsum, hydro fluo silicic acid, and ferro sand. The company has recently entered the commercial energy generation business and is in the process of setting up a 2,400 MW independent power plant through its wholly owned subsidiary, Sterlite Energy.
